Energy Saving Tips

Energy Saving Tips

Follow these tips to save on energy costs

  • Install these energy-efficient measures:
    • Weatherstrip around windows and doors.
    • Install energy-saver showerheads.
  • Set the furnace thermostat at 68 degrees or lower, and the air-conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees or higher, health permitting. 3 percent to 5 percent more energy is used for each degree the furnace is set above 68 degrees and for each degree the air conditioner is set below 78 degrees.
  • Use compact fluorescent lamps. You can lower your lighting bill by converting to energy-efficient low-wattage compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures.
  • Clean or replace furnace and air-conditioner filters regularly, once a month is recommended.
  • Fix defective plumbing or dripping faucets. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month. That not only increases water bills, but also increases the gas or electric bill for heating the water.
  • Wash only full loads in a dishwasher and use the shortest cycle that will get your dishes clean. If operating instructions allow, turn off the dishwasher before the drying cycle, open the door and let the dishes dry naturally.
  • Defrost refrigerators and freezers before ice buildup becomes 1/4-inch thick.
  • Install shades, awnings or sunscreens on windows facing south and/or west to block summer light. In winter, open shades on sunny days to help warm rooms.
  • Close the damper when the fireplace is not being used. Try not to use the fireplace and central heating system at the same time.

St. Jude Patient of the Month

Hayden’s story:

Shortly after Hayden’s fifth birthday, he began having headaches and nausea. At first, the doctor thought he had migraines and asked his mother to keep a record of when his head hurt. After only a short period of time, Hayden’s headaches grew more frequent. Then, he began having trouble with the vision in his right eye causing him to see double or as he put it, “seeing two.” It was at this point, his mother knew there was a bigger issue at hand.

Hayden was referred to an ophthalmologist for further testing. When the doctor examined Hayden’s eyes closely, he saw abnormal swelling and immediately ordered a CT scan. The results were upsetting: There was a mass on Hayden’s brain. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, after which a biopsy revealed more devastating news: Hayden suffered from a type of brain tumor called medulloblastoma. Hayden’s parents had heard about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and immediately asked their doctor for a referral.

At St. Jude:

Hayden underwent 31 rounds of radiation treatment, followed by four rounds of chemotherapy to help shrink the tumor. Physical therapy and speech therapy were also a part of his ongoing treatment.

While the idea of watching your child undergo treatment for cancer is overwhelming, Hayden’s parents found comfort at St. Jude. “Everything here is positive. You feel like everything is going to be fine,” said Hayden’s mom. “The hospital is really geared towards children.”

Hayden is a happy child who loves to go fishing at the lake, watch Scooby Doo, and play the Wii®. He recently finished his treatment and returns to St. Jude regularly for checkups. To his family’s delight, Hayden’s most recent sets of scans were stable.

DIAGNOSIS:
JaLise was found to suffer from medulloblastoma in May 2010.
JALISE’S STORY:
In May 2010, JaLise started to throw up after eating. Her doctor thought it might be due to acid refl ux and prescribed medication. But within a month, JaLise had lost 10 pounds. When she fainted one afternoon, her mother knew instinctively that something more was wrong. She took JaLise to the emergency room, where tests revealed that the little girl suffered from a type of brain tumor called medulloblastoma. JaLise underwent surgery to remove the tumor, but she would still need treatment. Her mother was familiar with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and asked for a referral.
AT ST. JUDE:
Doctors discovered that JaLise’s cancer had spread to her spine. Her treatment included six weeks of radiation and four rounds of chemotherapy to eradicate the cancer. “From the moment we walked through the door, I was amazed,” said her mom. “JaLise’s doctors and nurses are so caring. There is never a day I come here and dread it.” JaLise’s mom also appreciates that St. Jude never sends families a bill. “When you find out that treatment not covered by insurance is taken care of, it’s a weight off of you,” she said. “You don’t have to worry about how you’ll pay this or pay that. It’s a blessing. You can focus on your child JaLise recently finished treatment. She visits St. Jude for regular checkups and her latest sets of scans were clear. She’s a quiet little girl who loves princesses, music and dancing.
